DW married Joan in August 1931, and once they were married he was able to join her in her maisonette in the top two floors of 48 Queens Gate.

They had with them two of Joan's children by previous marriages – Diana from her first, and Colin from her second.

DW's financial situation worsened as the Great Slump took its toll, and he was finally forced out of his Wine business in 1932. It was then that Joan suggested he write a book. The results were 'Three Inquisitive People' and 'The Forbidden Territory'. The latter was published first, on 3rd January 1933, and two days later DW had a party here where his intimate friends played a game called 'Crossing The Forbidden Territory' with copies of the book as prizes.

It was here that he researched 'The Devil Rides Out', entertaining Aleister Crowley and Rollo Ahmed as he did his research, and it was here that – now a celebrity – he entertained former secret agent extraordinaire George 'Peter' Hill, who lay in his shirt sleeves full length on the sofa knocking back whiskies and sodas while DW sat at a small table taking notes as Peter provided him with background information to use in 'The Eunuch of Stamboul'.

In June 1935, Joan's lease was nearly up, and not wishing to renew it, they moved to No. 8 St John’s Wood Park.
