The church where in 1918 DW’s former best friend Cecil Cross married the girl with whom DW had been besotted in World War I, Barbara Symonds. The marriage only lasted a few days and DW attended the ceremony with his new, beautiful, and rich fiancée Nancy. In 1921 DW was best man at the same church for the marriage of his neighbour and lifelong-friend-to-be Hilda Gosling to her husband John Gardner.
