For several years, William Inglis (or 'Shitty Bill' as he was called behind his back) was the Major in charge of DW, Davis and the other lieutenants. Aged about forty five, he had returned from the Front, and according to DW he ruled his Battery with absolute autocracy. He was utterly unpredictable, and would treat his subalterns like boon companions one night only to have them 'thrown to the lions' (in DW's words) the next.

He was apparently an extraordinary sexual predator. According to DW, no woman between the ages of sixteen and fifty was safe from his advances, and while he was often rebuffed, he often met with success. Wheatley and Davis - and sometimes one of the others - were often corralled (whether willingly or unwillingly) into accompanying him on his amorous jaunts.
