As a local celebrity, in July 1968, DW was asked to be President of the New Forest Agricultural Show.

The attractions were mostly activities alien to DW – a dog show, beekeeping displays, woodmen’s competitions, clay pigeon shooting and the like, along with various commercial and charitable displays, all to the accompaniment of the Band of the Coldstream Guards.

DW and Joan were given heavy schedules visiting the various stalls and judging produce – something which DW did with his usual thoroughness. He and Joan hosted a large luncheon party in the President’s tent and handed out some seventy odd prize cups before hosting a tea for several hundred people.

Now in their seventies, Joan and Dennis must have been very tired by the time they made their way home.
