This picture from The Graphic in 1886 shows Prize Day on H M S Worcester in 1886. It had probably not changed much in DW's day.

One his final Prize Day DW was given the dubious honour of being one of the two boys chosen to stand on the main-top-gallant yard - the highest in the ship. He later remarked he was not quite sure how he did it given his dislike of heights.
